Roland (known as Orlando in Italy and Croatia) is believed to have been the nephew of Charles the Great and his most faithful knight travelling across Europe above all Germany. After Orlando heroic death, France, his native country, honoured him as a saint. Several centuries after that, Roland became the hero of the most famous medieval epics, the Song of Roland, that inspired numerous writers and storytellers throughout Europe. Nowadays, in Dubrovnik, Roland is considered as a symbol of freedom.
